Getting a colon screening has just gotten easier, faster and, more convenient for some patients.

Dr. Rodovaldo Rodriguez, North Georgia Surgery says "So I think this can potentially help them get screened and could potentially prevent colon cancer in a lot of folks."

North Georgia Surgery has launched what's being called "Speedy Scope."

Dr. Rodovaldo Rodriguez says, "Basically what speedy scope does is, it avoids that doctors visit.  Dr. Rodriguez says skipping that step could make a big difference for some people when it comes to scheduling their colonoscopy.

Dr.Rodovaldo Rodriguez says "Because a lot of people who are reluctant to do it because they miss time from work and it is difficult for them to throw one more thing in for what most people consider a risk of cancer."

It is important to remember that "Speedy Scope" is designed for healthy patients who are at average risk and have no symptoms.  Such as a family history,  abdominal pain, and blood in the stool.

140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year and more than 50,000 die from it.  But doctors say they can't stress enough that this disease is highly preventable, by getting screened beginning at age 50, even younger age 45 for African Americans.

Dr. Rodovaldo Rodriguez says "Other screening tests can detect cancer early, but not necessarily  prevent it and that's what makes it unique, its what makes it vitally important."

A matter of life and death in some cases.
