Local Facebook post alleging dog fight is a hoax

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - A post on a local Facebook group page about alleged dog fighting has turned out to be a hoax.

A man posted on the Hamilton County Buy, Sell and Trade in Tennessee Facebook page that he had a 3-year-old male pitbull to give away for free because he couldn't "fight for s**t." The post, which has since been removed, also included a disturbing picture of a bloodied dog.

The picture is real but it was from 2013 and was not a local dog. Hamilton County 911 Emergency Communications District posted a link to the older story on its Facebook page.

Director of McKamey Animal Shelter Jamie McAloon said they got numerous calls over the weekend about the post and the discussion its creating is positive.

"The number of calls that we've got and other law enforcement agencies got, that's great because people are more aware of dog fighting and they're not going to stand for it," she said. "They don't want it in their city, they don't want it in their community, so that's a really great thing to see and hear."

McAloon said there's dog fighting in our area and that teens are the fastest growing population of up-and-coming dog breeders.

If you know of dog fighting in the City of Chattanooga, call McKamey on an anonymous tipline at 423-305-6508. But McAloon said to call 911 if its happening in the moment.

Dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states.
