CHATTANOOGA, TN (GoMocs.com)--The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team snapped a two-match slide with a strong 6-1 win over The Citadel Sunday. The Mocs swept the doubles and won five of six singles to even their Southern Conference record at 1-1.
“It was fun to finally get on our outdoor courts,” stated UTC head coach Carlos Garcia. “There was a great crowd and a great atmosphere with the students returning from spring break. “
Juniors Luke Saunders and John Peacey teamed at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season and quickly dispatched The Citadel's Peter Bleach and Nick Bradley (8-3). Sophomores Lucas Plesky and Nic Wilson followed with an 8-4 win over Artemie Amari and Oliver Dedding at No. 2. Senior Pavels Grigorjevs and junior Nick Wingord finished off the Bulldogs with an 8-4 win over Connor Grady and Ryan Templet at No. 3.
UTC had won the doubles point five times coming into the day's action. However, only twice had they turned strong opening play into a team win.
The Mocs kept the momentum and won the first three singles matches to clinch the win. Peacey was first off the court with a (6-1, 6-0) win over Templet at No. 2. Junior Gino Delavalle followed with his (6-0, 6-2) win against Grady at No. 5. Junior Luke Saunders clinched the win with a (6-0, 6-1) win at No. 3.
Wingord and Plesky closed out the scoring with wins at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively. It was Plesky's first match in the top spot as he improved to 6-5 in spring singles.
“I was very proud of the way we played today,” added Garcia. “We were solid from the first point in doubles to the last point in singles. If we keep this up, we can achieve more conference wins this season.”
The Mocs are back in action on Thursday with a trip to Alabama State. The next home contest is March 28 against Furman. Check the men's tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com for recaps and links to live scoring as available.
