CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB)-- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Hall of Fame Head Basketball Coach Jim Foster was one of the many in the coaching fraternity reacting to the news of the passing of 83 year old coaching legend Dean Smith.

Smith had been battling a form of diminished mental capacity over the last few years according to his family.

He died late Saturday night.

Sunday atop Missionary Ridge, Foster had this to say about the coach who influenced many, far beyond the game of basketball.

" I think my first thoughts were not about basketball. He was an unbelievable behind the scenes person, in causes that were important to him," said Foster. " He was anti the death penalty,  he helped integrate Chapel Hill in a very quiet, behind the scenes kind of way and he just had an incredible passion and interest in people. " The basketball stuff to me is somewhat secondary."
