UPDATE: A man escaped from his burning home on Glass Street early Thursday morning.

Roy Harden, 65, said he awoke to the sound of “popping and cracking." Harden noticed thick smoke and ran out the back door.

"When I woke up and looked around, all I could see was flames. I came out with nothing and I went out the back door," Harden told Channel 3. "I didn't even think I was gonna get out of the house. It was all smoke. I had to feel my way out."

A neighbor heard the noises and saw the fire, and called 911.

Four fire companies helped control the blaze and kept it from spreading to nearby homes. But Harden's home is a total loss with damages estimated at $60,000.

Three cars parked in the driveway were also seriously damaged or destroyed.

"The house was standing and it ain't standing no more," said neighbor Eugenia Jackson. "I am really devastated."

The Red Cross is helping Harden with housing, food, clothing and medicine.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Harden has worked at Armandos on Highway 58 for about 10 years.

They're helping him raise money.  If you can donate, go to Armandos, and they'll make sure he gets it.
