Harper Lee Returns

Posted: Updated:

(NBC News) The novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" is one of the most beloved in American literature, and author Harper Lee never published another novel...until now.

Word that Lee will finally publish a second book sent ripples through the publishing industry Tuesday.

"If you said to every major New York publisher 'What is the one book you would like to have?' I'm guessing a sequel to 'To Kill a Mockingbird' would be pretty high on the list," says Entertainment Weekly Senior Editor Tina Jordan.

Lee earned the Presidential Medal Freedom and a Pulitzer Prize for that 1960 book, which reflected racial tensions in her native Alabama during her childhood of the 1930s and a film based on the book became an Oscar-winning classic.

Many of the characters, including Scout and Attacus Finch, will be revisited 20 years later in the new book "Go Set a Watchman". It's a work Lee actually wrote before "Mockingbird", but had put aside.

The 304 page book will be released on July 14th, just a few days after the 55th anniversary of "Mockingbird"'s initial publication.
