FTC offering helpful events during tax identity theft awareness week

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - This week is Tax Identity Theft Awareness week and to raise consumer awareness, the Federal Trade Commission is offering up some alarming statistics and some helpful events for consumers.

According to FTC statistics released Monday, Tax ID theft was the top complaint from consumers in 2014, and the number of  IRS imposter complaints was nearly 24 times more than in 2013.

Tax identity theft typically happens when a scammer files a fraudulent tax return using another's social security number and receives the refund.

To call attention to the issue, the FTC is co-hosting a webinar on Tuesday at 2 p.m. EST to address how Tax ID theft happens and what you should do if you become a victim.

Then on Wednesday at 1 p.m. EST, the FTC and Veterans Affairs will host a webinar for veterans.

Links to those webinars can be found on the FTC's website by clicking here
