Moc Grapplers Dominate VMI in 35-3 Win

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (GoMocs.com)---The Chattanooga Mocs put on another dominating performance in Southern Conference action at Maclellan Gym today.  UTC won nine of 10 matches in a 35-3 victory against VMI (6-6, 3-2 SoCon).

Chattanooga celebrated Senior Day in impressive fashion, only allowing five takedowns in the nine contested matches.  UTC improved to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in SoCon matches.  It was the 19th-straight league win for Chattanooga.

“Great job by the guys,” said head coach Heath Eslinger after the match.  “Again, we win nine out of 10.  That's 18 out of 20 on the weekend, so that's good.  I really thought we had a chance to win at 165-pound match.”

The 165-pound match featured UTC freshman Justin Lampe and VMI sophomore Shabaka Johns.  Neither could score a point in the first two periods.  Johns got in tight for a takedown in the third, but Lampe quickly escaped.  Lampe tried to get the go-ahead score before the final buzzer, but Johns held on for his eighth-straight win.

Sean Boyle was the lone senior in action on Senior Day.  He made the most of his appearance with a 20-6 major decision.  Nick Soto didn't break a sweat in his walkover and sophomore Michael Pongracz scored a nice 3-0 decision at 141.

Freshman Jacob Murphy won this first collegiate dual with a 7-2 decision at 149.  Junior Austin Sams gave the Mocs a 21-0 lead with his tech fall at 157.  Johns takedown against Lampe at 165 was the first allowed by UTC in the match.

Sophomore Sean Mappes posted a 13-2 major at 174, followed by sophomore John Shrader and sophomore Scottie Boykin's major wins at 184 and 197.

Sophomore Jared Johnson had a tough match at heavyweight with Juan Adams.  Adams was the preseason pick to win the SoCon and came into the bout with a 4-0 record in league matches.  Johnson used his quickness for two early takedowns.  He then used his underrated power to score backpoints and 5-0 lead after the first period.

Adams tried to mount a comeback with two takedowns of his own in the second frame.  He added another in the third, but Johnson kept getting away.  Johnson went on to win 9-7 and improve to 24-6 overall and 4-0 in SoCon action.

“We will see these guys again in the conference tournament,” added Eslinger.  “That's where you really want to win.  We will learn from it and move forward.”

The Mocs are back in action on Friday against Davidson.  Note the time change to Noon for the Jan. 30 dual.  Come out to Maclellan Gym on your lunch break to enjoy some great collegiate wrestling.  If you can't make it, be sure to check the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com for links to live scoring and the MocsVision broadcast.
