Elderly man charged after giving young boy sexually explicit note inside store

Posted: Updated:

A 75-year-old Chattanooga man was charged with solicitation of a minor after police say he admitted to approaching a 12-year-old boy at a local Walmart and handing him a sexually explicit note.

"Hey Good Looking. Give me a call sometime. I live alone and would like to arrange an intimate relationship between the two of us! Anything that will turn you on..."

The rest of that note police say was hand-written by John Wesley Chandler is too graphic to air on the news.

While the boy waited near the front of the Collegedale Walmart store while his mom was in the checkout line, surveillance captured Chandler approaching the boy and handing him the note before leaving the store.

The boy showed his mother the piece of paper. She alerted a Walmart employee who then called police.

"Kind of makes me cringe, actually," said shopper, Jimmy Braden, who said the incident was disturbing, especially because he has several grandkids.

"You kind of need to keep an eye on them anyway, but you've got that kind of thing going on in your community, well, you need to be extra careful," he said.

When police tracked down Chandler, he admitted to writing the note and handing it to the 12-year-old.

Collegedale officials didn't have Chandler's photo on file Friday.

Other Walmart shoppers said they had no idea the incident happened several months ago.

"I can't imagine somebody doing that. That's just crazy," said Felipe Paccagnalla.

"Just because it happened at a Walmart doesn't mean the Walmart is bad. But still, that's just sad that people do that," he said.

Chandler has no criminal history and Collegedale Police released him on his own recognizance. He will have to register as a sex offender if convicted.
