Cold and rainy today. Slushy mountain snow Saturday morning

Posted: Updated:
(WRCB) - Good Friday!  We have an interesting weather pattern heading into the weekend.  You are waking up to widespread rain showers for the morning commute.  Temperatures this morning are in the mid to upper 30s, so we are talking wet roadways, but we should remain ice-free.

Low pressure moving by to our south this afternoon will allow the rain showers to continue, and we will not warm up much reaching a high of only 44.  Rainfall amounts through tonight will range from .50"-.75" on the Plateau and in the TN Valley.  Amounts will be a bit higher in north Georgia and into the Blue Ridge Mtns., ranging from .75" to a little over an inch.

Overnight we will see the scattered showers continuing on and off with cooler air moving in and transitioning the rain to slushy snow showers on the Cumberland Plateau during the early morning.   I also expect some of those snow showers to develop over the Blue Ridge during the morning.  Temperatures will be in the low 30s in the mountains, so some ice in spots is not out of the question.  I expect it to be just rain showers in the valleys Saturday morning.

The rule for Saturday will be wait as late as possible in the morning to travel.  After sunrise, we will warm well above freezing quickly, and skies will be clear by noon making the roadways MUCH more passable.  The high Saturday will reach 47 under mostly sunny skies in the afternoon.

Sunday, another front will move in.  Ahead of the front it will be quite warmer with a high of 57.  The front will also bring scattered rain showers to the area Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.  Monday morning we may see a little moisture remaining that could bring us a little mixed precipitation to start the week.  Temperatures at the surface, however, will stay well above freezing Monday morning.

Next week will be cool and dry.  For details, download the WRCB weather app.     David Karnes
