Georgia officials to honor MLK ahead of holiday, open plaza

ATLANTA (AP) - State officials are planning to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. ahead of Monday's holiday honoring the civil rights leader.

The state ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Friday inside the Capitol and will feature tributes to King by elected and community leaders. Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal is among those scheduled to speak.

The governor then plans to dedicate the newly completed Liberty Plaza located across from the Capitol. Deal promised in his inaugural address this week to add a statue of King on the Capitol grounds within view of the plaza.
