Incentives for Volkswagen to develop site

Posted: Updated:

A top Republican in the Tennessee General Assembly says he expects lawmakers to keep it's promise by approving a 300-million dollar incentive package for Volkswagen, despite misgivings over a "secret deal" for the United Auto Workers union at the plant in Chattanooga.

House leader Gerald McCormick says while he understands some of colleagues' concerns about the union's growing role at the plant, he doesn't want to backtrack on a deal struck by Governor Haslam that is leading to a 2-thousand job expansion at the factory.

Lawmakers will be asked to approve 178-million dollars in grants to help Volkswagen with site development, machinery, and jobs training.

Other portions of the package come in tax credits, that don't need legislative approval.
