Mocs Visit Gardner-Webb, Host Campbell to Open SoCon Action

CHATTANOOGA, TN (GoMocs.com)---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team opens the Southern Conference portion of its 2015 schedule this weekend.  The Mocs visit Gardner-Webb on Friday, Jan. 16, and host Campbell on Sunday, Jan. 18. 

UTC was picked to win its 29th conference title in the preseason by the league's coaches.  The Mocs are off to a 5-5 start with two of their five losses coming against ranked competition. 

The Gardner-Webb match is 6:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in the Paul Porter Arena in Boiling Springs, N.C.  It broadcasts live online on the Big South Network with a link available on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com

UTC hosts Campbell at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday in Maclellan Gym.  Tickets for the match are $5 and available at the door or online at GoMocs.com.  All UTC students receive free admission.

UTC is coming off a 2-2 showing at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 9-10.  Chattanooga lost to West Virginia (19-21) and No. 10 Edinboro (17-21) before scoring wins over Nebraska-Kearney (30-6) and Kent State (27-9). 

CLOSE LOSSES
All five of the Mocs losses have been very close matches.  Four have been by four points or less and only at No. 22 Old Dominion did UTC not win at least five individual matches. 

INDIVIDUALLY
Seniors Sean Boyle and Nick Soto lead the team at 125 and 133, respectively.  They are both No. 12 in this week's InterMat individual rankings and both have 19 wins on the year.

Junior Austin Sams is coming off a strong showing at the Virginia Duals.  He went 4-0 last weekend to even his overall record at 11-11.  Sophomore Jared Johnson also had four wins at the Virginia Duals.  He leads team with a 20-6 mark at heavyweight. 

MOCS VS. THE SOCON
The Mocs are 29-1 in SoCon action in five seasons under current head coach Heath Eslinger.  The lone loss was a 17-25 setback at home to Appalachian State on Feb. 5, 2012.  Since then, UTC has won 15-straight league matches. 

Chattanooga has won 11-straight league-opening matches.  The last time it dropped a match to the first SoCon opponent on its schedule was a 36-6 loss to the Mountaineers on Jan. 19, 2003.

Gardner-Webb is 3-6 overall and 1-1 in SoCon action.  The Bulldogs are coming off a tight 20-15 loss to the Citadel on Wednesday.  Their league win came against VMI (31-9) on Dec. 3. 

GWU was picked fourth in the SoCon in the preseason.  Freshman Chris Vassar was the preseason All-SoCon choice at 141, but he has not been in the lineup since early in the season.

Ville Heino defeated John Lampe at the both the Hokie Open and the Southern Scuffle this season.  However, John Shrader is listed at 184 for the Mocs this weekend.  Heino leads the SoCon at 184 pounds with a 15-9 overall record.  

MOCS PICKED TO WIN SOCON TITLE
The Mocs were selected as the preseason favorite to win the Southern Conference title by the league's coaches.  UTC has won 28 SoCon titles since joining the league in 1978.  Head coach Heath Eslinger's squad claimed the regular season and  tournament crown in 2014, received seven first-place votes and 49 points overall.
