UPDATE: A man charged with a potential scam pleads guilty.
Channel 3 reported in January that according to police Randy Davis was going door to door showing a picture of a 15 month old little girl.
He told people he didn't have health insurance for his daughter and that he was trying to raise 15 thousand dollars for surgery on her facial tumor. Davis apparently pulled the scam in several counties in Tennessee.
He pleaded guilty last week to theft over 500-dollars.
He was ordered to pay restitution within 60 days.
Deputies are investigating a possible scam involving a father raising money for his sick daughter.
"He really put out a sad story to get into people's pockets," said Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum. "He took advantage of some of the greatest people I know in this county and we want to make sure this guy is prosecuted."
Sheriff Clint Shrum is warning people about Randy Davis, 57 of Cannon County, TN. Officials say Davis is at the center of a fraud investigation that involves more than 200 potential victims across 6 Tennessee counties. Authorities say Davis went door to door showing a picture of a 15-month-old little girl on a flyer that says he doesn't have health insurance for his daughter. The flyer asks for help in raising $15 thousand dollars to pay a surgery on his daughter's facial tumor. He was also reportedly using official business cars form the Sheriff and Police departments saying he had permission to go door to door. Sheriff Shrum says Davis never had permission.
"It went from her being sick to recovering and he actually told several people she had already died and he was collecting money for the funeral," said Sheriff Shrum
Davis posted an ad for help in a local newspaper. Carl Burnette says he and several of his church members reached out to help.
"We were going by the paper, the Grundy County paper that it was true and we find out later it wasn't...it hurts."
Sheriff Shrum told Channel 3 in their investigation deputies have not been able to determine if Davis had any children at all. Davis insists he isn't lying.
"They never once asked if I had any pictures with my daughter with me which I have in my phone," said Randy Davis
He sent us a picture of a 4-year-old little girl with what appears to be a mark on the left side of her forehead.
"They're just totally on a witch hunt is all it was... they just wanted to get me out of their county," said Davis.
Davis admits the picture on his ad was deceiving because it's shows her much younger when the tumor was bigger, he says at the time he didn't have a current photo and that all of the money raised... was used for treatment.
"I want to thank all of the people who did give me work or scrap metal to help us, I thank them," said Davis.
Davis is charged with one count of theft over 500 dollars for obtaining funds under false pretenses. Officials have subpoenaed family medical records. They say more cases are pending
