1,300 migrant children placed in Tennessee

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (News Sentinel) - More than 1,300 Central American children have been released to sponsors in Tennessee over the past year after illegally crossing the U.S. southern border, according to new figures from the federal government.

The latest data shows 1,361 unaccompanied migrant children have been placed with sponsors in Tennessee since October 2013 while they await immigration proceedings.

Their arrival was part of a surge of border crossings that caught the Obama administration off guard and caused consternation among officials in states where they were placed.

Between October 2013 and September 2014, some 1,294 unaccompanied children were released to sponsors in Tennessee — a higher figure than previously reported. Previously released federal data put the number of children placed with Tennessee sponsors during that period at 909.
