Feds still investigating 2 years after GA teen's gym death
VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - A federal prosecutor says authorities are still investigating the death of a Georgia teenager whose body was found inside a rolled up gym mat at his high school two years ago.
Classmates in Valdosta found 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson dead on Jan. 11, 2013. Sheriff's investigators concluded he died in a freak accident, but Johnson's family insists he was killed. They planned a rally Saturday to mark the second anniversary of his death.
Several months after Johnson died, U.S. Attorney Michael Moore of Georgia's middle district announced a federal investigation on Oct. 31, 2013. He said in a statement Friday his investigation remains ongoing more than a year later, having "proven more complicated" than he originally anticipated.
Moore said federal investigators "remain committed to following the facts wherever they may lead."
