Students brave cold weather at bus stops

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Hamilton County schools and other area school districts decided early on to delay or even close Thursday due to the cold weather.

Buses for Hamilton County schools ran on a two-hour delay Thursday morning. Channel 3 caught up with some parents and kids in North Chattanooga as they waited at the bus stop.

Albert Medina is a father to a Red Bank Elementary fourth grader. He said he would have preferred schools to just close altogether.

"I like the delay because it does give them the chance to be out in the sun, warm up a bit," said Medina. "I'd much rather my son be at school and learning as much as he can but standing out here for 15-20 minutes waiting on a bus is kinda rough."

Ben Coulter oversees Hamilton County's fleet of 230 school buses. He said the cold can also cause mechanical problems and about a dozen buses wouldn't start Thursday. Coulter said they have mechanics on site to resolve any issues.

"We're just worried about the temperature and kids being clothed well enough to be able to withstand the temperature," he said. "We had a couple where brake lines froze up on them, so we had to get replacements for those."
