Cold for the new year, with rain Friday / Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Good Wednesday.  We wrap up the year with a cool down.  We are starting the day in the upper 20s and low 30s.  This afternoon we will have highs in the mid 40s under partly cloudy skies.  Grab the coat as you head to the Doubletree Hotel to see the Coke bottle rise to welcome in the New Year.  The temperature will already be in the mid 30s by 8pm.  By midnight we will have a temperature in Chattanooga of 31.  Skies should be clear, so other than the chill it should be a nice night.  The temperature will continue to drop into the mid to upper 20s by Thursday morning.

Thursday afternoon will be cool with a high of 48.  Thursday night will see some clouds building, and we may get a stray shower or two overnight into Friday morning.  I keep getting asked if I think we could see snow Friday morning.  It just doesn't look like it.  the low will be in the low to mid 30s, and the temperature profile through the atmosphere doesn't support snow.  Light rain showers will continue on and off through the day Friday as the high climbs into the mid 40s.

Saturday, we will start with widespread rain showers and a low of 40.  Showers will remain on and off through the afternoon.  The high will climb to 55.  Saturday evening, an area of low pressure will drift through bringing widespread rain Saturday night and maybe even a thunderstorm or two.

Sunday will be dry but windy.  Winds will blow from the northwest at 10-20 mph through the day.  Temps will be mild starting out Sunday with a low of 48, but we will only warm up a few degrees with a high of 52.
