Chattanooga DUI deaths are down

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (AP) - Chattanooga police say they've been using new tactics to fight drinking and driving and so far this year, they've seen a big reduction in alcohol-related traffic deaths.

A Chattanooga newspaper reports police said five people had been killed in alcohol-related accidents as of Wednesday, which is down more than 60 percent from last year when 14 people died.

After the spike in deaths last year, police say they decided to increase their focus on bar checks and bar owners.

When the checks began, bar owners complained that officers were interfering with their businesses, but after a series of meetings, a better relationship developed.

Now, police say bar owners do a better job of monitoring how much people drink and some will call cabs for intoxicated patrons.
