UPDATE: Chattanooga police are investigating a stabbing that happened on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Christmas Day.

The victim, Charles Wheeler, who is 50 years old, told police he was sitting on the curb in the 300 block of MLK Boulevard drinking a beer when he was attacked. Wheeler told officers the suspect walked up asking for his beer, then stabbed him several times when he didn't get it.

"The fellow stabbed him and ran down the street," said George Ottrix, Friend of the Victim. "I walked up here to see what was happening and he was gone... they were putting him in the ambulance."

George Ottrix tells Channel 3 that Wheeler has been homeless for many years. He said Wheeler is a sweet man who usually keeps to himself. After the suspect ran off, eyewitnesses say Wheeler left a trail of blood all the way down the sidewalk into a convenience store for help.

"There was a drop here, drop there and there... two or 3 drops were in front of the cash register," said one witness.

Officers arrested Lesley Raymond Wilkey, 53 for Attempted First Degree Murder. Officials say Wilkey was quickly arrested on East 8th Street after a suspect description was given to patrol officers. Police say Wilkey threw down a knife when he saw officers approaching him.

Wheeler was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injures. He is expected to be okay.

"He was a good honest guy out here on the streets working hard trying to survive, doing what he could," said Martin Collier, Victim's friend.

"It makes me feel a lot better," Reporter: "That this guy is off the streets?" Collier:"Yes, that's one less person that will attack us all."

Leslie Wilkey is charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, he is being held on a $500,000 dollars bond. Officers are still asking anyone with information in this case to call Chattanooga Police. Wilkey who has a lengthy arrest record is scheduled to appear in Hamilton County General Sessions Court Monday.
