Community Kitchen serves Christmas dinner to those in need

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - At least 600 meals were served Thursday at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. The volunteers were very busy making sure everyone who showed up received a holiday meal.

"You do stuff with your family but these people don't have anything, so its something good to give back," said Debbie Shelly, Volunteer.

Debbie Shelly was one of many volunteers who spent their Christmas giving back to people in need at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen

"I don't have a lot of money to give. This is the what I do with my time," said Shelly.

Shelly gave her time for the past 2 weeks with 50 other volunteers who worked together whipping up home cooked meals that would be ready to serve the high demand of people who say they're homeless.

The minute the doors opened, the cafeteria filled quickly and the line held a steady flow of people until the moment they closed.

Marvin waited in line for 45 minutes and says it was well worth.

"I feel blessed, I have been on and off the streets for 14 years," said Marvin, Homeless.

His plate was pilled high with turkey and all the fixings and served by a volunteer who also gave him a hug wishing him a Merry Christmas.

It was a special experience for those in need and volunteers who helped today and year round.

The community kitchen will need volunteers to help clean up and welcome anyone who wants to donate their time.
