GA transportation officials offer driver safety tips

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - State transportation officials are urging drivers to keep safety in mind before they hit the road for the holidays.

Officials from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety say there were roughly 44,000 crashes that resulted in more than 13,100 injuries and 160 deaths in Georgia between Nov. 20 and Dec. 31, 2013. Officials say taking steps to improve driver and vehicle safety can help diminish the risks.

Officials from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety say drivers should get a vehicle checkup that includes the electrical system, brakes, tires, exhaust and heating systems.

Officials say drivers should also prepare winter travel kits that include bags of abrasive materials, a small shovel, an ice scraper, a flashlight, windshield solvent, gloves, a blanket and more.
