Community Kitchen holds memorial service for homeless

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - On the longest night of the year, those who died while living homeless are remembered.

Bradley Gabehart is among those mourning friends.

"Linda and David, but Wesley the most; he was my buddy, traveling partner," said Gabehart. "It ain't easy forgetting them."

Hundreds of Chattanoogans are homeless and for some of those who have passed, this service will be the only remembrance of their lives.

"So many of them die alone without family or friends and there's no one to really care for them or love them in their death," said Brother Ron Fender, Brotherhood of St. Gregory.

It's their way of letting these people die with peace and dignity. “And tell them they are loved and cherished," said Brother Ron.

While they may not be blood relatives, Gabehart says these are the people he spends his time with, laughing, loving and living the happiest life he can.

"Yeah, it's kind of like a family. You miss them when they're gone," said Gabehart.
