The Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will be close the Stringer's Ridge Tunnel Wednesday, December 17, from 8:00pm - 6:00am Thursday to perform maintenance and repair work on the overhead drainage system.

The overhead drainage system is leaking, which is allowing water to fall onto the roadway below.

TDOT says that during the previous year, sub-freezing conditions combined with the leaks to form ice in the tunnel.

The repair work is expected to improve the situation. The tunnel is one of the main routes between Red Bank and Chattanooga.

Crews should complete the work in one night, but necessary, work will continue Thursday, December 18, 2014 between 8:00pm - 6:00am.

Detours will be posted during the tunnel closure.
