TN officials encourage sustainable decorations

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee environmental officials are urging holiday revelers to consider sustainable decorating methods.

The Department of Environment and Conservation suggests buying live Christmas trees and decorating them with recycled or natural materials like popcorn or cranberries strung into garland. Other tips include using LED holiday lights that use 90 percent less energy than incandescent lights, and setting them to pre-programmed timers.

Several of these steps have been taken at the governor's mansion in Nashville, where live trees and garland were provided by the Tennessee Christmas Tree Growers Association.

Some of the trees were decorated by members of the Tennessee State Parks Junior Rangers program, including recycled ornaments made from natural items found in state parks, like corn husk dolls, leaf tracings and animals shaped from birdseed.
