LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) - Virginia Military Institute has hired Virginia offensive line coach Scott Wachenheim to be its football coach.
Athletic director David Diles made the announcement Sunday. He says Wachenheim rose to the top of the school's list of candidates because of the vision he articulated for the long-struggling Keydets' program and because of his extensive history working and developing recruiting ties throughout Virginia.
Wachenheim has been at Virginia since 2011 and had worked for three seasons at Liberty.
He replaces Sparky Woods, who was fired after seven seasons with a 17-62 record, including 2-10 this year.
Wachenheim graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1984 and Diles says his academy background was also attractive in VMI's search for "someone who understands and respects the varied experiences of cadet athletes."
