COLUMBIA, TN (AP) - A woman who made news around the nation last month when she visited the ocean for the first time at the age of 100 has turned 101.

Ruby Holt spent most of her life on a farm in rural Tennessee, picking cotton and raising four children. When workers at Brookdale Senior Living Solutions in Columbia found out she had never been to the beach, they filled out an application with the Wish of a Lifetime organization.

The application was accepted, and last month, Holt took a trip to the Gulf of Mexico.

On Friday, Columbia Mayor Dean Dickey joined Holt's 101st birthday celebration, proclaiming the day "Ruby Holt Day" in that city.

The proclamation referenced the media coverage of Holt's trip to the ocean and called her "our local celebrity."
