(KING)  Christmas tree farmers say the federal government has delivered them a lump of coal just in time for the holidays.

The US Department of Agriculture has delayed a government coordinated, industry supported PR boost much like the one delivered to the dairy industry with the 'Got Milk' campaign for another year.

Under the program, any farmer who cuts and sells 500 or more trees a year would have to pay an assessment of $0.15 per tree. That money would go into a fund used to promote the sale of trees.

The industry requested the program years ago in response to dwindling sales. Part of the losses came from competition with fake trees and part of it was related to the recession.
