TSSAA approves proposal to fine schools for publicly criticizing officials

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - The Legislative Council of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) approved a proposal Wednesday that could results in fines of $500 for schools whose coaches or administrators criticize game officials.

Approved Wednesday, the proposal for addition to Article I, Section 8 addresses what the TSSAA calls the “Responsibility of the Principal” in the the TSSAA Bylaws.

Tweets posted by the TSSAA during the meeting also worked to clarify the issue; with one stating “Public criticism of game officials by administrators or coaches may (changed from "will") result in a fine of $500.00 assessed to the school”

Another tweet added “Voted to add Q&A/examples to the handbook to more clearly define what could warrant a fine.”
