CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - A Chattanooga man faces a new charge of aggravated rape stemming from an alleged assault over the summer.

Thomas Wright Lawman, 56, is charged with aggravated assault and now aggravated rape.

The victim told police Lawman beat and raped her on a boat before throwing her in Chickamauga Lake on July 30.

According to a witness, Lawman told her "he could have let her drown."

Police said she had injuries to her face consistent with being hit by a hard object.

She initially declined to go to the Rape Crisis Center.

Lawman was booked Friday, December 5 on that new charge of aggravated rape and he's due in criminal court February 11.
