NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam is kicking off a public safety summit in Nashville on Monday.

The event being held at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel is focusing on issues including violent crime, Tennessee's sentencing laws, homeland security concerns and drug abuse and trafficking.

House Speaker Beth Harwell is also speaking to stakeholders at the meeting that will be attended by police chiefs and sheriffs, prosecutors, family support providers and addiction treatment providers and victims' advocates.

Guest speakers will discuss gang and domestic violence, prescription drug abuse and an increase in heroin and meth trafficking. Also on the agenda are efforts to fight human trafficking and reduce the number of repeat offenders.

Haslam in 2011 created his public safety subcabinet to coordinate efforts to make Tennessee a safer state.
