Lee University men's and women's soccer win national championships

KISSIMMEE, FL (WRCB) —  Two NCCAA national championships are coming home to Lee University in Cleveland after both the men's and women's soccer team won their respective tournaments on Saturday.

The women were tied with Grace College (Indiana) 1-1 and then went to double overtime. When that did not settle it the game went to 8 rounds of penalty kicks before Lee won 5-4.

Lee advanced to the final by defeating Campbellsville University (Kentucky) 3-0 in Friday's semininal.

Making the All-Tournament Team from Lee were: Alison Braun (defender), Kinsey Cichowitz (midfielder), Kathryn Healy (forward), Kaela Lescovar (forward). Healy was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament and Lescovar was named Most Outstanding Player.

Lee University's women's soccer team is coached by Matt Yelton. This is Yelton's fifth national championship after winning the NAIA title four consecutive years 2008-2011.

The men's team won its final by defeating Bethel College (Indiana) 2-1 in the final on Saturday. It advanced by defeating Shorter University 2-1 (Georgia) on Friday.

Named to the men's All-Tournament Team were Joey Henshaw (goalkeeper), Jonathan Finlay (defender), David Perez (midfielder), Quade Marinell (forward). Marinell was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player and Perez was named Most Outstanding Player. 

Lee University men's soccer is coached by Paul Furey.

The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) is an association of more than 100 Christian universities. In 2012, the NCAA invited Lee to begin the three-year process to membership into Division II.
