Courtney League is taking a big step forward to life on her own.

She's signing up for her own health insurance plan after previously being covered under her parents.

“Half the stuff you know, it's like, what does that mean? I don't know,” she said.

Which is why she came to this open enrollment events at the Collegedale Public Library. Healthcare Navigator Nancy Ridge says the questions League asked are common and important when it comes to finding the right coverage for you.

“We help people understand what is a deductible, what is co-insurance vs. co-pays, what is in network vs. out of network. And those are very critical things before someone makes a selection of a plan,” Ridge said.

Navigators help folks understand the difference between the 87 plans offered through four providers which is more compared to this time last year.

“We have to assess the health literacy of the consumer. We also have to educate them about health insurance,” she added.

Ridge believes many people are happy about the coverage through
because many people are re-enrolling.

“They were satisfied with the Marketplace plans or perhaps they want to try a different plan but they're satisfied with the Marketplace plans,” she added.

Forty-five minutes later, League is able to breathe a sigh of relief. After a little bit of guidance, she's ready to take that next step.

“I know what that stuff means now and I know that having insurance isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg,” League said.

Navigators will be available for free assistance at the enrollment events. Consumers will need to bring proof of identity (driver's license or picture ID), have social security numbers and birth dates for all members in the household, and proof of income (W2s, 2013 income tax return or paystubs).

However, if the consumer did not give the Marketplace permission to use their tax returns, they will be enrolled into the same plan with no subsidies.
