NBC News - Sports Illustrated Kids has chosen Mo'Ne Davis, the 13-year-old breakout star of last summer's Little League World Series, as the 2014 “SportsKid of the Year.”

The announcement came Monday through a tweet made by first lady Michelle Obama, who congratulated the star pitcher by telling her, “You knocked it out of the park for girls everywhere.”

Davis became a sensation last summer after leading the Taney Dragons to third place among U.S. teams. The ace right-hander became the first female pitcher to throw a shutout in a Little League World Series game and only the fourth girl to play in the tournament.

She also became the first Little Leaguer to ever grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. In September, she donated her jersey to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

“Davis epitomizes grace, determination and poise as a unique athlete dominating on the baseball field and in the classroom,” Sports Illustrated said in a news release announcing the “SportsKid” title. “The honor roll student has helped her school sports teams capture thirteen titles in basketball, soccer and baseball.”

Davis will also be honored during the annual Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year ceremony scheduled for Dec. 9 in New York.

The annual SI Kids Sports of the Year honor started in 2007 to recognize young athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and in service to the child's community.
