Nearly $40,000 in rare coins stolen

DALTON, GA (WRCB) -

The Dalton Police Department is asking for the public's help to identify a man who stole an assortment of rare coins valued at nearly $40,000 from a local store, according to the DPD.

The theft took place November 17th at Dalton Stamp and Coin on West Waugh Street.

Police say a man came into the store and began a conversation about rare coins. The owner then showed the man a box of 70-80 coins.

The suspect then asked to see something under the counter, and according to the police report, then concealed the box of coins under his jacket. He then told the owner he needed to got to his car to get his credit care to make the purchase.

After a short period of time, the owner then noticed the box of coins was gone. The coins' vaklue is estimated to be about $37,000.

The suspect is described as:

  • A black male with a shaved head
  • Approximately 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds
  • Suspect last seen wearing eyeglasses, a dark jacket, jeans, and white tennis shoes

While investigating this incident, Dalton investigators learned that the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department is investigating a similar crime in which a suspect matching the Dalton suspect's description stole a rare $1,000 bill.

In that incident, the suspect wore a black track suit with yellow trim.
