BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Tech Hokies were ambushed by the Appalachian State Mountaineers and went on to lose 65-63 on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies are now 2-1 on the young season.

Adam Smith (11 points), Justin Bibbs and Devin Wilson (10 apiece) led the Hokies attack. Frank Eaves, who notched a game-winning layup, led the Mountaineers with 19 points.

Appalachian State lead by as many as six points early in the second half before Virginia Tech clawed its way back in front. Back came the Mountaineers, forging ahead 59-56 with 5:43 to play. A Joey van Zegeren dunk put tech up again 60-59 with four minutes left.

Virginia Tech tied the game at 63 with ten seconds left on a van Zegeren free throw. Eaves then drove the length of the court for the Mountaineers to score the winning basket. A last-second heave by Tech was off the mark.
