UGA looks to boost research funds

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - University of Georgia officials are working on plans they hope will boost the amount of research funds flowing to the school.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1tbOA8p ) the board of trustees of the University of Georgia Research Foundation met Friday to discuss the effort which includes hiring consultants to review the process and make recommendations. The consultants are set to present their findings next month.

UGA Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Pamela Whitten says the goal is to smooth out bureaucratic hurdles that researchers face in obtaining and administering grants.

Last fiscal year, UGA had nearly $143 million in sponsored research, down from $149 million the previous year.

About 2 percent of funds come from corporate sponsors, while some comparable universities receive between 6 and 8 percent.
