Hamilton County Exceptional Ed students get safety helmets

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - During tornado drills, or actual emergencies, students are told to hold a book over their head for protection.  But hundreds of exceptional education students are unable to do so. Thanks to some kind community members, those students now have protection.

Coy Ellis, Safe and Sound program coordinator for Children's Hospital, was happy to deliver helmets for exceptional education students at Apison Elementary, furnished by the Hamilton Place Rotary Club. He said the club has purchased helmets for some 800 students countywide.

Teachers and nurses at Apison, and other schools identified the need for extra help, and the Hamilton Place Rotary Club answered the call.   Club member Donna Horn, also a School Board member and retired teacher, led the charge.
