Proposed Hamilton Co. Schools 2015-16 calendar includes August start date

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Despite occasional complaints from parents about a school start date that creeps into early August, no drastic changes will likely take place in 2015.

School Board members are likely to approve a plan on Thursday that would have teachers report on August 6, registration on August 10, and students beginning classes on August 13. Administrators say an August start date is necessary to ensure the first semester ends before Christmas.

All certified and full-time classified employees were given an opportunity to vote on four calendar options for the 2015-16 school year. Start dates were the same, with some variations in length and timing of breaks.

A total of 2,307 votes were submitted in late October. More than 78 percent of respondents preferred "Draft # 3" which would include week-long breaks in the fall and spring.   Board members traditionally approve the employees' recommended calendar.
