BEVERLY, Ky. (AP) - A group of graduate students from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville are working to improve living conditions in a poverty-stricken area of eastern Kentucky.

A handful of students spent last weekend assessing safety conditions at homes in southern Clay County. The information will become part of a database about living conditions in the area.

The Knoxville News Sentinel ((http://bit.ly/1uZsXOf)) reports that students plan to analyze the data to find common problems and inexpensive solutions. They also hope their data can be sued to bolster grant applications to fund those ideas.

The initiative is just one involved in a partnership between UT, Red Bird Mission and Clay County officials called The Appalachia Project. The main priorities of the project are to improve health and safety issues facing residents.
