DALTON, GA (WRCB) -
We all know how helpful cell phones can be, but one local man says it helped save his life.
Jerry Scriver was taking the trash out at work when he was attacked by a man with a knife. He says if it weren't for his cell phone in his front pocket, he wouldn't be alive.
"I always keep it in my pocket, something i guess was a blessing if it wasn't for that I don't know where i'd be," said Scriver.
Scriver tells Channel 3 Eyewitness News he doesn't use his cell phone much but keeps it close. Scriver said around 1 o'clock in the afternoon Friday, a man approached him behind Instacash off of Walnut Ave in Dalton where he works.
"I was taking out the trash, he made a gesture like do you have a cigarette I said no I don't smoke and then he made a gesture like do you have any money," said Scriver.
When he said no, the man pulled out a 4-5' inch knife.
"I did fear for my life, he kept swiping the knife and moving around and stuff and I just kept an eye on it," said Scriver.
They dance around for several minutes.
"I just tried to keep as calm as I could."
Holding the knife up... the suspect then lunged forward.
"It was like a shock, I mean I felt pressure. I knew he had cut at me and I knew he had cut something," said Scriver.
The blade cut through his shirt hitting his cell phone. The man ran through the woods, Scriver was left with bruises and a scratch on his chest.
"I'm just thankful I'm here able to talk to everybody today," said Scriver. "I'm going to go out and get T-shirts with pockets I guess because that's just unbelievable."
The close call not only changed his wardrobe, it's changed his perspective...
"You never know what will happen don't take life for granted enjoy your family, spend time with them you never know what tomorrow will bring," said Scriver.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male around 5'5, 120 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and dark pull over. Scriver says the man who attacked him also has a very distinct tattoo of the number 13 on the right side of his neck. If you see this man or have any information that could help investigators call police.
