CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - UPDATE: Investigators are trying to figure out how a Chattanooga minster and veteran died. His body was discovered Tuesday morning lying in a ditch.

Police were called to 2200 Blackford Street just after seven o'clock Tuesday morning on reports of an abandoned car. While searching the area, that is when officers and the man's wife saw him on the side of the road.

His wife says the man is her husband, 60-year-old Kenneth Johnson, a minister and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Police are not saying how they think he died, although his wife says a gun was found at the scene.

Sandra Johnson says she is heartbroken over her husband's death.

"He was such a nice person. He was my best friend. He was my best friend," says Sandra Johnson, through sobs.

Sandra Johnson tries her best to fight back her tears after finding her husband, 60-year-old Kenneth Johnson, lying in a ditch off Blackford Street Tuesday morning.

"Kenneth loved people," she says.

Sandra and her husband, a minister at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, ran a local outreach program.

"I guess it was somebody who probably needed some help and he was going to help them," says Sandra.

He told her Monday night he was going to meet with someone and that he would be home later with dinner. But he never showed up.

"And so we called and he didn't answer his phone."

She says it was not uncommon for Kenneth to stay out late helping others. Then Tuesday morning police knocked on her door saying they found her car abandoned in an alley.

"We followed the police over here and got the car. And my daughter got in the car and when I looked around the Holy Spirit said, "There's Kenneth." Somebody threw him in the ditch and they found the gun and the gun and all that was over there and my husband's in the ditch and I started to scream and holler. And the police didn't even know he was over there," says Sandra. "Kenneth was a good person and he was my best friend. And our anniversary is November 20th. And next weekend we were going to go to Florida and now we aren't going to anywhere."

She says all she can do right now is pray.

"God said that He'd never leave us nor forsake us. And He said that He would help us no matter happens. He'll help us. He'll find them. He always will. He'll find them, whoever did this to Kenneth," says Sandra.

Police are only calling this a death investigation at this point.

Johnson's body has been transported to the Hamilton County Medical Examiner's Office to determine his cause of death.
