5th jail employee accused in military leave scheme

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A fifth Shelby County Jail employee has been accused of misusing military leave.

The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1xucKhz) 49-year-old Christopher Jones is accused of taking 38 days of unauthorized military leave.

According to the sheriff's office, the deputy jailer surrendered to authorities on Friday. He is on unpaid leave pending a disciplinary hearing.

Sheriff Bill Oldham announced earlier this week that two current deputy jailers and a jail-processing assistant, plus a former deputy jailer, had been arrested. All of the suspects face charges of theft of property between $1,000 and $10,000.

Oldham said the problems were uncovered after the sheriff's office asked for an audit because of a high number of employee absences.
