Memphis area makes gains in smog reduction

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Officials say federal regulators could soon declare Memphis and surrounding areas in compliance with the Clean Air Act for reducing smog, which could help the region attract manufacturing jobs.

According to The Commercial Appeal ( ), Shelby County officials say data over the past three years indicate the area has met the strict ozone pollution standards enforced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency since 2012.

If the EPA agrees, Shelby County in West Tennessee, Crittenden County in eastern Arkansas and part of DeSoto County in north Mississippi would be reclassified from "nonattainment" to "attainment" of air-quality standards.

The change would remove costly pollution-control requirements for any incoming industry or large factory expansion.
