WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - A Whitfield County Sheriff's Office Patrol Sergeant was arrested and charged with Driving under the influence of alcohol on Friday morning.

44-year-old Micheal Smitherman reported to mandatory training for domestic violence, which had been scheduled for patrol supervisors.

Upon his arrival at training a senior officer smelled alcohol on the Smitherman's breath and requested he take an intoxilyzer test since he had been observed driving his assigned patrol vehicle to the training.

Upon submitting to the alcohol test in the booking department of the Sheriff's Office it was determined Smitherman was over the legal limit to operate a vehicle.

Smitherman was arrested and charged with Driving under the influence of alcohol and was immediately relieved of duty and placed on administrative leave, pending the conclusion of an Administrative Investigation by the Sheriff's Office.

Smitherman was released on bond after a local bonding company signed a property bond assuring his appearance in Court.

Sgt. Smitherman has been employed by Whitfield County since 2006.
