UPDATE: Mulch fire continues to burn at old land fill in Cleveland

UPDATE: A mulch fire continues to burn Cleveland, Tennessee at the old landfill.

We're told over the weekend, the wind shifted and smoke headed to a residential area.

But because the fire is located on an old landfill they cannot dig under it to help burn it out.

They are attempting to use a "water curtain" in the area to keep the smoke down.

A large pile of mulch is burning at the old land fill in Cleveland. Cleveland Fire Chief Bob Gaylor tells Channel 3 the mulch fire is a result of a spontaneous combustion that happened around noon Tuesday.

After trying to put out the blaze, the decision was made to let it burn itself out, which Chief Gaylor says could be a few days due to the size of the pile.

Chief Gaylor also says there is no danger to any of the surrounding apartment complexes, homes or Animal Control which is located about a quarter of a mile down the road.

Crews are on hand to monitor the blaze and to keep it under control.
