People and pets walk for a cause

Posted: Updated:

A walk that helps both pets and people was held Saturday at Greenway Farms.

The Puppy Up! walk benefits comparative oncology research and the non-profit, 2 Million Dogs, sponsored the event.

Veterinary oncologists estimate between 4 to 8 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in companion animals every year.

"We get a referral everyday for chemotherapy and for cancer. It's several times a day actually. It's huge. It's a large number," says coordinator Tim Maddox. "If people would actually see the number, it's alarming how many pets have cancer."

The non-profit has donated thousands of dollars to Princeton University where shelter dogs are treated for mammary tumors. Studies are then conducted to see how breast cancer progresses in women.
