Police: Cremated remains of 40 people stolen

KNOXVILLE (WBIR) - Knoxville police confirmed that cremated remains of 40 people were stolen from two cemeteries.

The thefts happened at Highland Memorial on Kingston Pike and Highland West on Sherrill Boulevard.

"We were dealing with one family on their loved ones cremated remains and we discovered they were missing. If we had not been dealing with this one family, this could have gone undetected for some time," said Fred Berry, President of Berry Funeral Homes.

Berry said everything that occurred happened outside in either columbarium's or special memorials. The mausoleums were not touched.
