Hamilton Co. Sheriff’s Office warning public of phone scam

Posted: Updated:
HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - Several complaints have been received by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office over the last few days involving a phone scam.

Police tell Channel 3 the complainants state they received a phone call from a male identifying himself as Lt. Blackmon with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Division. He advises them they had a warrant on file with the Sheriff's Office for their arrest but they could pay a fee to solve the issue.  He directed them to go to an area Wal Mart and purchase a green dot card for an amount of money, then call him back at a phone number he gave them.

The sheriff's office wants the public to know this is a scam and DO NOT send money to anyone who calls and identifies themselves as representing the HCSO.

The Fugitive Division does serve arrests warrant but they do not request money nor would they direct or request anyone to buy green dot cards.

If anyone does receive a phone call such as this please immediately call the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office or the law enforcement agency that serves the community where they reside to report this crime.
