Facebook is launching a new tool that lets users notify others during or after natural disasters.

The tool is called "Safety Check" and it allows Facebook users to tell others they are safe.

Many already use the social media site for the same purpose, but Facebook says "Safety Check" will make that even easier.

It will be available worldwide to Facebook's 1.32 billion users on computers and mobile devices.

The idea grew out of a Disaster Message Board Facebook created in 2011 following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
